ACRI- Biotechnology Working Group
To monitor, generate and support research in the biotechnology of cacao to improve its production and quality, particularly through the Biotechnology Program at the Pennsylvania State University.
Penn State Endowed Cocoa Biotechnology Program:
In 1986, an endowment grant was given to The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) by the cocoa and chocolate industry in the USA to create a Biotechnology Program at PSU for investigation of the genetics of cacao. The primary aim of this program was, and still remains, one of making improvements in the cacao tree by developing varieties resistant to the pests and diseases affecting cacao, and to produce plants with increased yield and other desirable properties.
